Anyone remember those commercials? I used to think they were the weirdest things ever; those and the “clap on, clap off” commercials used to stick in my head for hours on end. Being a dimwit I just realized that the seeds used for chia pets are the same chia seeds I eat nearly everyday... But to my understanding I was not the only one who didn’t make that connection! In fact there’s probably a lot of people who still don’t know what chia seeds are; but fear not by the end of this entry you’ll be ingesting chia seeds in no time!
Chichichia seeds have been surfacing health/food blogs for the past two years and are getting more recognized today. They’re magical little seeds that absorb liquids, easy to eat & digest, and are a powerhouse of nutrients! One serving of chia seeds has about 2.4 grams of omega 3’s, 4 grams of fiber, and are rich in antioxidants. Chia seeds support good heart health, provide anti-inflammatory benefits, and promote lean muscle mass. That’s what I’m talking bout! They can be used in smoothies, oatmeal, salads, as an egg-replacement, and even as a thickening agent in stews. Impressive right?
I’ve been adding chia seeds to my smoothies for about a month now and must say I’m impressed. The chia seeds make the smoothie voluminous without the use of xanthan gum; it’s truly sensational and here’s a simple way to obtain it’s benefits…
- 1 frozen ripened banana (add 1 cup of ice if your banana is small)
- three medium sized figs (you can substitute figs for any berry)
- 3/4 cup non dairy milk
- 1/4 cup vanilla non dairy OR greek yogurt
- 1/4 tsp almond extract (amazing!!!)
- optional: 1/2 tablespoon agave
- and… 1 generous tablespoon of chia seeds!
^ Place all ingredients in blender and blend, blend, blend!
